CalWonk aims to be the premiere blog for all California public policy news. If you are interested in legislation, ballot measures, or regulations then you have come to the right place. CalWonk produces original content and aggregates policy news from across this diverse and complex state. Our focus is stuff that policy wonks love without the gummed up politics.
Phillip Ung is the creator of CalWonk and its affiliated sites.
During the day, Phillip Ung is the Director of Public Affairs at California Forward. Prior to joining California Forward, Phillip was policy advocate for California Common Cause where he established himself as the state’s leading voice against corruption and the undue influence of money in politics. Phillip developed and led successful legislative advocacy campaigns to pass legislation related to voting rights, money in politics, and ethics in government. In addition, Phillip shined the light on California’s largest money laundering scheme and served as a surrogate for the successful Yes on Proposition 28 and No on Proposition 32 campaigns.
Previously, Phillip served as Acting Director of Public Affairs for the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CalCASA) where he advocated for stronger state and national policies to improve services to victims of sexual violence. In that vein, Phillip served as a policy advisor to the Sex Offender Management Board during the implementation of “Chelsea’s Law”.
Phillip has served as a lobbyist for Conservation Strategy Group, a full-service environmental and green technology consulting and lobbying firm, and as a legislative aide to a state assemblymember.
Phillip holds bachelor’s degrees in history and government from California State University, Sacramento.
